Dr. Anietie Ukpe-Wallace, PT, DPT
Meet the Self-Care Physio!
For those who know me, I go by Tia but Anietie Ukpe-Wallace is my given name. I am originally from Yonkers, New York but have been living in California for over 15 years and it is here where my interest in movement truly flourished although it was inspired by my college elective classes in ballet, tai chi, and yoga.
During my time as a yoga teacher, despite supposedly doing all of the “right things”, I was deficient in my self-care practice and truly caring for myself. I had very little understanding of female anatomy growing up yet considered myself an anatomy nerd, suffered through several years of recurrent yeast, bacterial and UTI infections, discovered that I had fibroids in my late 20s, miscarried at 20 weeks in my first pregnancy, had laparoscopic surgery to remove fibroids, had unexplained pelvic pain that were at times debilitating but did not have the resources or the funds to seek treatment that left me unable to walk for minutes at a time, and then had a c-section with my daughter.
So, my interest and thirst for knowledge around this taboo, vulnerable yet foundational piece of our bodies is what led me on the path to becoming a pelvic health physical therapist.
Despite my losses, my scars and somewhat tortuous journey I have navigated, it has only made me stronger and has helped me define and shape me as a therapist and as a person. My hope is that you too find the path towards healing and the genuine self-care that is so necessary in this day and age. If you have landed here to learn more about how you can gain more knowledge about your body, feel more empowered in your decisions and choices around your body and become a true advocate, I welcome you!
